Nitrate Content and Activities of Nitrate Reductase and Glutamine Synthetase as Affected by Plant Age , Leaf Position , Time of Day of Leaf Lettuce and Water Dropwort Grown with Hydroponics

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of plant age, leaf position, and time of day on nitrate content and activities of nitrate reductase and glutamin synthetase of leaf lettuce (Lactuca saliva L.) and water dropwort (Oenanthe stolonifera DC.). Nitrate contents in both crops showed peak at 6 a.m., then reduced until 4 p.m. Activities of nitrate reductase and glutamine synthetase were lowest at 4 a.m., and was the highest at noon. Nitrate contents in two crops showed peak 30 days after planting, while nitrate reductase and glutamine synthetase activities showed peak 20 days after planting. Nitrate content was the highest in first leaf, and the activity of nitrate reductase and glutamine synthetase was increased in higher leaf position, while the activities of those decreased in lower leaf position.
